The Hunger Games trilogy has been all the rage, especially in the teenage world which is where I live a lot of the time. This Friday, our school had a Hunger Games themed event to raise money for childhood cancer. Districts were made up by class grades. For example, 9th grade was District 9, 10th grade was District 10, etc. Tributes chosen from each district competed in games like battle ball, pie eating contest, and karaoke.
My contribution to the event was nightlock berry pies. If you have seen the movie or read the books, you will know that the nightlock berries are the poisonous berries that Peeta finds. Obviously, the berries I used were not poisonous, but rather were blueberries I got from the store. These mini pies were easy to make and were a big hit. More importantly, we raised $1,500 which will go to the local children’s hospital for their oncology clinic.
Nightlock Berry Mini Pies
1 pint fresh or frozen blueberries
1/2 stick butter
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat over 350
First prepare the crust. I prepared enough to cover 2 9 inch pie dishes. After the crust was rolled out, I used a biscuit cutter to make small circles. Then I pressed the circles into a mini muffin pan which a greased lightly with cooking spray.
Then mix all other ingredients in a bowl. Spoon mixture into each pie shell and place in the oven. Cook 30 minutes or until crust turns light brown. Let cool and then remove from muffin pan.
Makes 24 small pies.
